Agoda, JNTO: Tokyo Hits Top Five as Japan Gains Record Arrivals
As the estimated number of foreign visitors to Japan reached a record high of 3.29 million in July, Tokyo ranked fifth among international flight routes booked on a major travel platform in June and August.
The Agoda platform rankings placed Bangkok first for the second year running, followed by Seoul and Kuala Lumpur as top choices for global travelers. Seoul replaced Singapore for second place and Kuala Lumpur moved up to third, above Singapore in fourth. Tokyo replaced Ho Chi Minh City in fifth place.

Japan reported a 10.1% rise in the number of visitors from pre-covid July 2019, exceeding 3 million for the fifth consecutive month, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). Japan aims to draw an annual 60 million foreign visitors by 2030, says JNTO, but it must overcome labor shortages and congestion.
Visitors from 19 countries and regions such as South Korea, Vietnam and Taiwan also hit a record high for July. China led with the highest number of visitors (776,500), surpassing South Korea (757,700), Taiwan (571,700), Hong Kong (279,100), and the United States (251,200), which saw a 26.3 percent increase.
Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President, Supply at Agoda, said: “The summer of 2024 currently shows a trend towards Asia Pacific travel. Destinations like Bangkok, Seoul and Kuala Lumpur continue to attract many travelers, reflecting their appeal and the diverse experiences they offer. After I visited Seoul recently and climbed Inwangsan mountain, I can’t wait to go back and explore more of this city’s attractions.”
While eclectic Tokyo was partly helped by the weak yen, the figures seem to follow a trend for modern cities with exciting nightlife, innovative technology and futuristic skyscrapers which also preserve plenty of tradition, culture and historic architecture. Agoda offers more than 4.5 million holiday properties, 130,000 flight routes and 300,000 activities.
