Redefining Luxury: Japan’s New Era of Hospitality

With Tokyo recently ranked as the Best Big City in the World in the 2025 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, the spotlight on luxury hospitality in Japan has never been brighter. This accolade is increasingly defined by an influx of ultra-luxury hotel brands that are transforming the skyline and the guest experience.

Japan is firmly establishing itself as a global luxury destination through properties that do more than provide a place to sleep—they offer cultural immersion, architectural marvels and world-class service. From the historic streets of Kyoto to the bay views of Tokyo, here is how three upcoming properties are setting a new standard, featuring insights from people shaping these projects.

According to Mitsui Fudosan Co., LTD., the property will feature distinct dining experiences and the brand’s signature “Peacock Alley” alongside the 197 guest rooms, which include spacious king-size rooms spanning approximately 646 square feet.

She explains that the design, led by Kengo Kuma & Associates and Brewin Design Office, has “reimagined Kyoto’s traditional machiya townhouse architecture through harmonious layers of texture, natural hues and details inspired by Kyoto’s renowned artistry.”

The guest experience is envisioned as a sanctuary that embraces a tranquil open-air courtyard with a water feature, curated garden and a dedicated cultural performance space. The property will offer 89 keys with rooms starting at 50 square meters, including 20 suites. For the ultimate private indulgence, the hotel will feature six exclusive onsen suites.
