The Washing Machine Project (TWMP) is a UK-based nonprofit social enterprise that’s transforming how laundry is done in underserved communities. Founded in 2021, TWMP creates and distributes manually operated, off-grid washing machines designed to support displaced, low-income and remote populations. Its goal is clear: reach one million people by 2030 with a simple, practical solution to a daily struggle.
The Hidden Burden of Handwashing Clothes
In many parts of the world, handwashing laundry is physically exhausting and time-consuming. Families, mostly women and girls, spend up to 20 hours a week scrubbing clothes, using more than 50 litres of water per wash. This burden causes joint pain and skin irritation, and takes away time from education, income-generating activities and rest. The problem is widespread but rarely addressed.
The Divya Washing Machine: Simple, Sustainable, Effective
TWMP’s solution is the Divya Washing Machine, a hand-crank washing device that works without electricity. Its flat-pack design makes it easy to transport and assemble anywhere. Built from recyclable materials, the machine is tool-free, durable and entirely disassemblable. It reduces water use by 50% and cuts washing time by 75%. It’s an innovation born from real-world needs, designed in partnership with the communities it serves.
Real Impact Across Continents
The nonprofit has already impacted more than 46,000 people in regions such as Uganda, Gaza, Iraq and India. From refugee camps and schools to shelters and remote villages, families are gaining back time and comfort. Distribution has expanded to more than a dozen countries, including the United States, Mexico, South Africa, Poland, Kenya, Ghana and Greece. In each location, The Washing Machine Project delivers more than a product, it delivers dignity and empowerment.
