KIWL 4-Day Charity Cycling Tour in Wakayama

KIWL Classic 2026: 4-Day Charity Cycling Tour in Wakayama

Organized by the Tokyo-based fundraising group Knights in White Lycra (KIWL), the KIWL Classic 2026 charity cycling tour is set to return this year, taking riders through the beautiful prefecture of Wakayama. From May 28 to 31, participants will experience deep camaraderie, a sense of personal achievement, and stunning scenery. Above all, this event offers the unique opportunity to meet and support the kids in care for whom the group raises funds. For those interested in joining the event, an information session on January 21 will provide details and the chance to meet veteran riders. Details below.

Route and Scenery

The 2026 route covers approximately 500km, starting in Maibara and concluding in Shin Osaka. Cyclists will navigate a diverse landscape that includes flat river paths and ocean views alongside challenging mountain passes. While every effort is made by the organizers to utilize quieter roads to ensure a safe and scenic journey, riders should expect to encounter busy traffic in certain sections.

Rider Ability and Training Requirements

This event is designed as a challenging endurance ride rather than a competitive race, so participants do not need to be elite cyclists to join. Less experienced riders are welcome but must commit to a dedicated training regimen in the months leading up to the tour. Due to the nature of riding in a group, potential adverse road conditions, weather and other unforeseen circumstances such as mechanical failure or illness, the ride is not without risk. Therefore, adequate preparation is essential for the safety and enjoyment of all participants.

Sponsorship and Corporate Impact

Corporate sponsors play a vital role in the event’s success, donating between ¥200,000 and ¥1,000,000 or more. In return, sponsors receive logo placement on the cycling kit, website and social media channels. Companies also have the option to sponsor a specific day of the ride with a dedicated jersey. All corporate contributions are made directly to the chosen charity, ensuring the donation directly benefits children in care.

Participant Costs

Personal trip costs for the rider range from ¥120,000 to ¥150,000, covering necessary items for the journey. Note that this figure does not include transportation to the starting point in Maibara or from the finishing point in Shin Osaka. KIWL operates on a non-profit basis regarding trip costs, simply collecting the necessary expenses and distributing them accordingly to cover the event’s logistics.
