Theme parks for families with toddlers

Shima Spain Mura

Located in Mie Prefecture, and replicating the exotic atmosphere and charm of a Spanish townscape, Shima Spain Mura is a quick trip to Europe. The attractions at this theme park are myriad, including the steam roller coaster Iron Bull, the España Parade Carnival, Flamenco dancers, the Estival Festival fireworks during Golden Week and summer holidays, the Light of Isabella show and far more.

Moominvalley Park

Visit the home of the fictional Finnish Moomin family and their unique friends at Moominvalley Park, in Hanno, Saitama prefecture. It’s “a place where you can be brave enough to try new things,” take a closer look at the small flowers and insects that you normally don’t notice, and celebrate the change of the seasons. 

Among the child-friendly rides is Hemulen’s Playground: an enormous tree house with a panoramic view of the park. While walking through the park, you will encounter stories scattered throughout, and their characters stop to say hello and dance together during show time. You can see them again within the Moominhouse (designed by Moominpappa), Oshun Oxtra (a hands-on morphing theater) and Kokemus (the three-story exhibition facility).

Huis Ten Bosch

A five-minute walk from JR Kyushu’s station of the same name in Nagasaki, Huis Ten Bosch lives up to their motto of “Step into the extraordinary.” Their attractions include the Palace Huis Ten Bosch museum, and an entire world of characters from famous fiction. Visit the Amsterdam zone for the joys of Miffy’s Dream Storybook, or Harbor Town for the heart-pounding Jurassic Island. For the thrill seekers, try VR World-Ultra Reverse Bungee, VR Whitewater rafting or visit the heights of the Castle in the Sky, before gathering to watch the stunning night-time fireworks display.

Legoland Japan 

A Nagoya favorite with elementary schoolers, Legoland Japan Resort is a theme park providing a full day of family fun for younger children. There are over 40 rides, shows and attractions, as well as hands-on experiences such as the Learning Workshop. The park zones include LEGO City, Bricktopia, Pirate Shores, LEGO Ninjago World, Knight’s Kingdom and Miniland.

Theme Parks for families with older children

Tokyo Disneyland

A magical adventure across seven themed lands awaits at Tokyo Disneyland. The hotspots include The Happy Ride with Baymax and its high-energy music, Pooh’s Hunny Hunt, Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast and It’s a Small World, among dozens more. You don’t have to step away from the fantasy even for food — just visit Tomorrowland Terrace, The Big Pop (of popcorn) and Grandma Sara’s Kitchen among many others.

Tokyo DisneySea

Right beside Disneyland and with eight themed ports of call, including their newly opened Fantasy Springs area Tokyo DisneySea is a must-visit. 

For Golden Week travellers, the Tokyo DisneySea 25th Sparkling Jubilee begins from April 15, 2026, and hosts Disney friends dressed in special anniversary outfits parading through the park. Furthermore, in the American Waterfront area, a limited-time show is scheduled featuring Mickey Mouse dancing and serenading the crowd with music from around the world. There will be special appearances by characters such as Rapunzel from “Tangled,” Hiro from “Big Hero 6” and Mirabel from “Encanto.”

Universal Studios Japan

Located a short trip away from the bustle of Osaka, Universal Studios Japan (USJ) has plenty of big names scattered throughout, from Minion Park, to Harry Potter and even Jurassic Park. Among the dazzling shows are “Wand Studies and Wand Magic”, as well as “Triwizard Spirit Rally”, from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Meanwhile, eager riders can soar with The Flying Snoopy or The Flying Dinosaur from the world of Jurassic Park.

A theme park for thrill-seeking families

Fuji-Q Highland

The thrill-seeker’s dream, and easily reached from Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station, Fuji-Q Highland impresses with rides that get even the most hardened roller coaster veteran’s heart pumping. The “King of Coasters,” among the world’s scariest rides, is Fujiyama, terrifying visitors ever since its 1996 debut. And if reality isn’t scary enough, the park also has five popular attractions with VR and MX4D, resulting in unique turns, swaying and rotations being recreated to deliver the sensation of speed and exhilaration of a real roller coaster.

You should book your tickets as soon as they become available, which is typically one to two months in advance depending on the park. Golden Week is one of Japan’s busiest travel times, and therefore major parks like Tokyo Disney Resort, Universal Studios Japan and Fuji-Q Highland will often sell out of standard admission tickets and Express Passes weeks ahead of time.

Are Express Passes or Premier Access worth buying during Golden Week? 

Yes, they’re highly recommended. Because parks operate at peak capacity during Golden Week, wait times for popular attractions can easily exceed two to three hours. Purchasing a Universal Express Pass (at USJ) or Disney Premier Access (at Tokyo Disneyland/Sea) will save you hours of waiting.

Which Japanese theme park is best for toddlers and young children?
