Established in 2001, New International School of Japan (NewIS) is a mission-driven, custom-designed school serving 280 children from age 3 to Grade 12. Dual language in English and Japanese (all subjects) and multi-age by design, the school features a three-year age range of students and two teachers per class in a highly interactive, child-centered style of education. The principal curriculum resource is the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence. From age 6, the children learn to play the violin by ear, and Mandarin Chinese is offered as an elective. The school favors a translanguaging approach to language acquisition and use.

NewIS is accredited by CIS and MSA and is a member of the Progressive Education Network in the United States. Graduates have advanced to universities in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Canada, the United States, Ireland, England, Australia, Hungary, Italy, and the Netherlands.
