Discover the Power of Managerial Coaching with Free Workshops
Coaching within business can take many forms, and we’re often most familiar with it when it comes to executive coaching. But managerial coaching can help unlock success at new levels within your business.
Sometimes described as “leader-as-coach” behaviors, managerial coaching refers to when managers or leaders use coaching as a managerial skill. In the changing world of work, inclusion, psychological safety, and employee engagement have become more important in the workplace. Because of this, more organizations are expecting their managers to adopt a coaching approach when they lead. But how realistic is it to expect managers to coach effectively?
Managerial coaching is challenging for two reasons. First, while executive coaches go through months of training to acquire coaching skills, managers rarely have the same luxury. Second, the manager–report relationship is much more complicated than the executive coach–client relationship. Executive coaches usually sit outside the organization (external coaches), but managers are coaching employees who report directly to them. This adds to the difficulty of managerial coaching. At the same time, managerial coaching has many benefits. Studies have shown managerial coaching can help increase employee engagement, well-being, and job performance.
