Harrow Appi Offers an Education That Goes Beyond the Classroom

Founded in 1572 under a royal charter granted by Queen Elizabeth I, The Harrow School has provided a superb, world-class education to students of diverse backgrounds. Over the years, its alumni have gone on to positions of prominence in a broad array of fields. “Old Harrovians,” as graduates of the school are known, include former British prime ministers such as Winston Churchill, as former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, esteemed English writers Lord Byron and Anthony Trollope, and actor Benedict Cumberbatch. More recently, the Harrow family has expanded around the world, and has opened nine new campuses, the newest being Harrow International School Appi Japan, which now makes Harrow’s unique education accessible in Japan.

Harrow Appi, a full boarding school catering to students in Years 7–13, makes the most of its stunning environment. Situated in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu, the campus is graced with the sublime natural beauty of Iwate Prefecture. Surrounded by towering mountains, Harrow Appi offers its students a snowy haven during the winter months and a splendid verdancy during the spring and summer seasons. Dedicated to preparing its pupils for a life of learning, leadership, service and personal fulfillment, Harrow Appi instills its students with an ethos based on its four core values: courage, honor, humility, and fellowship. These principles serve Harrow’s students for life beyond school.

Moreover, thanks to the school’s full-boarding environment, students receive a British education system in a Japanese context, supported by round-the-clock pastoral care. Harrow Appi’s dedicated staff combine their extensive educational experience with a commitment to academic innovation, continuously finding new ways to approach the subjects that they teach.

The Lessons of Nature

Central to the Harrow experience is the importance of the great outdoors in shaping students’ outlooks, and in stimulating body and mind. By virtue of the school’s holistic approach to education, Harrow Appi’s students can explore and cultivate their passions in nature. Harrow’s extensive enrichment program comprises a series of co-curricular and super-curricular programs which collectively aim to develop six key leadership attributes:

  • Contributing positively to the community
  • Applying knowledge with compassion
  • Solving problems collaboratively
  • Solving problems creatively
  • Making fair and just choices
  • Facing challenges with determination

David Fitzgerald, the school’s assistant head of enrichment, explained that the benefits of the program are manifold: “At Harrow Appi, we embrace the idea that profound learning extends far beyond the confines of the classroom. Our stunning natural surroundings serve as a unique canvas upon which our students not only excel in their academic pursuits but also flourish in their personal development through our enrichment program.”

Fitzgerald added that athletics also serve as a key component of the program. “One strand of our enrichment program is our Sports Academies. Harrow Appi students can immerse themselves in our golf academy, teeing off on our 36-hole golf club; fine-tune their skills on our tennis courts, both within our campus and at our community club; and explore boundless terrain with our mountain biking academy. It’s a world of endless opportunities which harness the skills, values, and competencies of our young learners, instilling a love for learning.”

In an environment that combines state-of-the-art facilities with a stunning setting, students can freely explore their varied interests and passions. During white season, as winter is known in the region, the Harrow Alpine Academy allows students to ski or snowboard up to four times a week in the largest ski resort in Japan. Then, during green and gold seasons—from spring to fall—students can play tennis and golf or explore the nearby trails on mountain bikes. Each activity is supervised by elite coaches who cultivate students’ skills in each discipline and ensure their safety.

Teaching the Whole Child

Exceptional pastoral care is central to the Harrow Appi experience, as it has been at The Harrow School for centuries. Staff carefully monitor students’ progress academically, socially, and emotionally, both during and after school hours. The school holds itself to the highest moral standards, which are aligned with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and address the fundamental rights of every child, which include the right to develop and fulfill their potential, express their opinions, and be listened to. Pastoral staff are meticulously screened during recruitment and undergo situational training regularly to maintain the highest standards.

Providing an enriching, holistic education is at the heart of Harrow Appi’s philosophy, and the results of the last academic year demonstrate the effectiveness of this program—70 percent of the school’s students scored an A*-A on their A-levels. But the Harrow Appi team is as proud of the education that its students receive in the classroom as they do amidst the natural beauty that surrounds the campus.
