THE HARBOR TERRACE: Oceanfront Mt Fuji Views and Gourmet Cuisine

For a memorable escape from city life, the Harbor Terrace Hotel in Zushi is about an hour or so by train or car from Tokyo, with breathtaking views, world-class dining and a relaxed beach town setting.

Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed with a glass of chilled sparkling wine while admiring the panoramic view of a snow-capped Mt Fuji. The combination of scenic beauty and the serene atmosphere immediately set the tone for our one-night stay.

All eight guest rooms have oceanfront views, making it a great location to relax while listening to the soothing sounds of waves. We chose the Fujisan room for its natural and elegant theme, spacious bathroom, fully equipped kitchen and wide space overlooking Zaimokuza Beach just 50 meters away.

We didn’t wait long to stroll along the beach—popular for surfing and windsurfing—to lunch at a nearby restaurant with a spectacular setting. Back at The Harbor Terrace, we enjoyed the iconic infinity pool and private sauna with aromatherapy overlooking the sea, Enoshima and, naturally, Mt. Fuji.

After an afternoon relaxing on our private terrace watching the water sports below, we sat in silent awe as the setting sun cast a golden glow over the ocean, beach and distant mountains, creating an unforgettable postcard-perfect backdrop.

At dinner, the sommelier introduced us to the menu and wine. The service throughout was impeccable, with each course arriving at just the right moment, allowing us to savor the flavors and enjoy the ambiance. The staff was attentive yet unobtrusive, providing a level of hospitality that made the evening feel truly special.

After a creamy amuse-bouche of mushroom soup, they brought out hors-d’œuvres featuring mouth-watering salmon tartare with yogurt sauce, organic local vegetables and soft flat fish with smooth white wine sauce. The main dish was Chiba beef in a rich red wine sauce and whitebait rice bowl; dessert was a delicious grape sherbet with mousse, and a pear compote with cookie and caramel ice cream.

Included with dinner was a glass of sparkling Chateau de l’Aulee. I also opted for the perfectly paired French Chardonnay by Joseph Drouhin; New Zealand Sileni Sauvignon Blanc; South African Audacia Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and a Spanish Monastrell-Juan Gil.

Dining at The Harbor Terrace was not just about eating; it was about savoring the beauty of nature, the artistry of chefs and the refinement of wine, all coming together in a unique celebration of culinary excellence.

The next morning, we enjoyed preparing the diverse and healthy breakfast that had been delivered to our room and placed in the fridge during dinner—generous portions of fresh fruit, eggs, yogurt, cheese and soft bread that had been baked overnight in our kitchen.

Just 15 minutes away on the road back to Tokyo, we dropped in to see the Big Buddha at Kamakura—an amazing climax to a weekend of exceptional dining and relaxation in an unparalleled setting.
